Theft of and out of motor vehicles is becoming more prevalent at shopping malls and petrol stations, according to Douglasdale police spokesman Warrant Officer Balan Muthan.

Criminals gain access into the vehicle by jamming the signal when the victim presses the button on his or her central locking remote.

“The remotes used by criminals are easily accessible and inexpensive. When you press the button on your remote, the criminal at the same time holds the button in on his remote, jamming the signal. I have tested this on my own vehicle and it works”, says Muthan.

The police offer the following tips to make sure you do not become a victim of this crime:

  • After using your remote to lock your vehicle, go and make sure the vehicle is locked.
  • Do not activate your alarm while walking away from your vehicle.
  • Do not leave valuables such as laptops in the boot or in full view of the public.
